The square building of the Gonbad-e Alavian dates back to the Seljuk period. It was originally built as a mosque by the Alavian family, complete with minarets and a green dome, though it was later transformed into a family mausoleum by adding a crypt to it.
Gonbade Alavian as the most noteworthy monument in Hamadan is amazing for the outstanding quality or its stucco ornamentation, and beauty with whirling floral motifs on the exterior- walls and intricate geometric designs on its Mehrab.
The interior decoration includes exquisite carved stucco and brick panels and the exterior decoration features inscriptions in Kufic script that were added in the Ilkhanid period.
Its interior dimension and rich decoration, eye-catching and mysterious, is somewhat similar to the building of Qazvin Heydarieh dome, built in the early 6th AH century. The interior area is formed of six rooms with arches. Cube-shaved graves covered with turquoise bricks are in the center. Few high skylights, adjoining the ceiling give a good lightening to the area.
The dome`s sanctuary located on the south side with beautiful decoration has added to the richness of building.
